On Wednesday, October 29, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, a Health Career Showcase for UPEI students will be held in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Interested students are asked to come out and join local health professionals to learn more about health careers on PEI. UPEI faculty and staff are asked to encourage their students to attend. Join UPEI Student Affairs in their lounge to watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk "A Danger Of a Single Story" on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:30 pm. This talk begins by telling a story about what the speaker would write about as a child. She would write stories that were similar to the foreign stories she would read, which depicted children that looked nothing like her. When she found African stories, she realized that people like her could be involved in the stories. If we hear or read stories about a part of the world, we tend to perceive that part of the world as the stories describe those places. After viewing this Ted Talk, an open discussion will be held to discuss the complexity of the Talk. Two graduate students in Biology will present the findings of their research in the Environmental Science and Human Biology research seminar series on Friday, October 24 in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204. Hailey Lambe will speak to her MSc research conducted under the supervision of Drs. Marina Silva-Opps and Sheldon Opps as part of the Urban Fox project. Her talk, which starts at 12:30 pm is entitled: "Where does the fox stay? Den site selection and movement patterns of Charlottetown's red foxes." Luke MacDougall will speak to his MSc research conducted under the supervision of Dr. Rob Hurta on the effects of natural products on prostrate cancer cell growth. Luke's talk, which starts at approximately 1:00 pm is entitled: "Magnolol inhibits protein expression levels of cellular adhesion molecules in DU145 human prostate cancer cells in vitro." The second candidate for Associate Dean, School of Engineering, Dr. Amarjeet Bassi, Western University will present on Friday, October 17, 10:45 am-12:00 pm in McDougall Hall, Room 243. UPEI’s new School of Engineering is in the process of searching for its first Associate Dean who will be the academic, administrative, and community leader of the School. Two candidates have been short-listed and invited to campus for a public presentation and final interview process. This public presentation is an opportunity for the candidate to express their view to the campus community on “The Role of the Associate Dean in Leading the New School of Engineering at UPEI.” All are welcome to attend!
