On Sunday, October 26 at 2:30 pm, the UPEI Music Department will play host to a "triple header" at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. The "Piano Collective," a group of four pianists playing eight-hand music on two pianos will make their debut in a performance featuring beloved music of J.S. Bach, Mozart, Glazunov, Mendelssohn, Moszkowski, and Bizet. The occasion also marks a celebration for Professor Emerita, Dr. Frances Gray who officially retired this year after serving forty-five years as Professor of Piano and Theory in the Music Department of the University of Prince Edward Island. Dr. Gray will be accompanied by three alumnae of UPEI who all studied piano with her in the Music Department, Stephanie Cole, Morgan Saulnier, and Jacqueline Sorensen Young. As a tribute to Dr. Gray's years of contribution to the Music Department, the afternoon will launch a Music Scholarship for outstanding student performers in the Music Department.

Heather Taves returns home to PEI and the UPEI Music Department on Friday, October 24 at 7:30 pm where she will present her solo piano recital entitled Come From Away at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Drawing on the stories her parents, and her aunts and uncles told about their lives, Taves' recital at UPEI will trace the history of her family as refugees from Russia in the 1920s to 1968 when her family moved to Prince Edward Island. Heather’s musical journey will include pieces by Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky, contemporary composer Keenan Reimer--‐Watts, as well as Taves' own composition “My Mom and Glenn Gould: A Two Part Invention.”

DOCTalks is a new approach to knowledge mobilization that began at St. Thomas University four years ago. It spread to UNB and Memorial University and is now being adopted by university researchers across Canada. DOCTalks creates partnerships between researchers and professional filmmakers to produce documentaries that bring the research to the wider world in a compelling and accessible way. This in itself is not a particularly new idea. Documentary filmmakers and academics have collaborated since the early days of motion pictures. What is new about DOCTalks is its innovative approach to financing. DOCTalks allows researchers to dramatically increase the money they can use for knowledge mobilization by tapping into the funding sources available to documentary filmmakers in Canada such as the Canada Media Fund. If you are interested in learning how you can take advantage of this approach for your research projects, you are strongly encouraged to attend the DOCTalks Panel happening this Saturday as part of the annual Island Media Arts Festival. The panel includes Lloyd Salomone from DOCTalks at St. Thomas University, Dr. Fiona Walton from the UPEI Faculty of Education who has used documentaries very successfully in her work, and Mark Sandiford, a local Gemini-award winning documentary filmmaker.

Liz Shropshire is the founder of the Shropshire Music Foundation, which has provided instruments and music classes to more than 15,000 war-impacted children in conflict zones including Uganda, Northern Ireland, and Kosovo. After receiving her BMus. from Brigham Young University in Composition and Theory and an advanced graduate degree from the University of Southern California in Composition for the Music Industry, and working in music education and composition for decades, Liz dropped everything to move to a refugee camp in Kosovo where she developed innovative programs using music to redress war trauma in children. Utilizing classes taught by trained teen volunteers, the Shropshire Music Foundation continues to expand and is presently developing new programs for refugee camps around the world.
