In 2012, Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne. Support was rallied from government, the private and public sectors to fund an inspiring new scholarship initiative in her honour: the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program. This program represents a unique opportunity to activate Canadian students and Canadian universities. With investments made to Canadian universities, this program will facilitate a dynamic community of young global leaders across the Commonwealth to create lasting impacts both at home and abroad through cross-cultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences. As part of this new program, Canadian universities are invited to submit multi-year project proposals seeking funding of up to $500,000 for projects of two to four years to support Queen Elizabeth Scholars. Only AUCC member institutions can apply; universities may submit no more than two proposals to the competition. Universities may partner with one or more AUCC members for a joint proposal. Research on Tap returns for its sixth season of public discussion, debate, and ideas presented by researchers from the University of Prince Edward Island. Join our next conversation TONIGHT: Monday, November 3 at 7:00 pm at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown. Dr. Ron Srigley, professor of Religious Studies, will lead a discussion entitled: "What does a university professor do all day?" The 2014-15 season of Research on Tap is presented in cooperation with the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Atlantic Chapter. The RSC is Canada’s national academy and is the senior national body of distinguished scholars, artists, and scientists. Research on Tap meets the first Monday of every month from October to April. UPEI's University 100 program presents Anita Acai, 3M National Student Fellow on Friday, November 7 in Andrew Hall, Room 142. Anita will present the following sessions: "The Cult of Busy" from 10:30-11:15 am. During this presentation, Anita will discuss how our society has an unhealthy relationship with being busy and challenges "what are you being busy for?" Anita, a 2013 National Student Fellow, will share engaging and meaningful insights about the ubiquitous "cult of busy" and talk to students, staff, and faculty about where the 3M project is at today. Anita will also present "3M National Student Fellowship Program, Experiences and Application Process" from 11:30 am-12:00 noon. Anita will lead an informal discussion on the 3M National Student Fellowship program which is sponsored by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). She will discuss her participation in the program and the application process. All students, faculty and staff who may be interested in learning more about this prestigious leadership development program are encouraged to attend. Developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and taught by one of our counsellors, “Mental Health First Aid Canada teaches first aid skills to help someone who is developing mental health problems or is experiencing a mental health crisis. Anyone can benefit from learning mental health first aid.” The 12-hour program will be taught on consecutive Fridays, November 28 and December 5. To optimize learning opportunities, enrolment will be capped at 20 participants – we will be offering another course in the second semester and groups/departments wishing their own offering are welcome to contact us to make arrangements. Cost for the course is $50 – this includes 12 hours of training, program manuals, coffee and two refreshment breaks per day – participants will be free to make their own lunch plans. UPEI faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend the Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law on Friday, October 31 in Don and Marion McDougall Hall, room 242 at 1:30 pm. This lecture is co-sponsored by the University of Prince Edward Island and the Law Foundation of Prince Edward Island. The lecture series was named to honour Thane A. Campbell, Rhodes Scholar, former Premier of Prince Edward Island, and first Chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island. This year's speaker is Mary Anne Waldron, QC, Professor of Law at the University of Victoria and Associate Vice-President Faculty Relations and Academic Administration, who will present her lecture entitled "Equality and Conscience: Can the Law Protect Both?" Waldron's current research relates to questions of freedom of conscience and religion. Her most recent book "Free to Believe: Rethinking Freedom of Conscience and Religion in Canada" was awarded the Canadian Law and Society Association 2014 prize for best book on issues of law and society. On Thursday, October 30, and Friday, October 31, 7:00-11:30 pm, UPEI music students will be turning the Steel Building into a spooky three-story haunted house. Admission is $5.00 per person, and $4.00 if you show a valid UPEI or Holland College student ID. Admission includes a free cup of hot chocolate. Proceeds from this event will go towards music scholarships and awards, and to help support the large performance ensembles of the Music Department.

UPEI students are going door-to-door in surrounding neighbourhoods to collect non-perishable food items on Friday, October 31 from 5:00–7:00 pm in support of UPEI’s food bank. Trick or Eat® is a youth-led national event that puts a new spin on the annual night of giving – Halloween. Instead of candy, thousands of Trick or Eaters across the country raise money online and go door-to-door to collect non-perishable food items for local food agencies. We also raise awareness about hunger in Canada through household flyers, educational materials, and online resources. Suggested items include: pasta products/pasta sauce, rice, canned meats and fish, peanut butter, cereal, canned vegetables, dry and canned soups, fruit juices, canned/powdered milk, baby food, diapers, and beans and legumes. UPEI students, staff, and faculty can drop off any food donations to the Residence Office, Bernadine Hall, 340 (first floor). The office is open from 9:00 am-8:00 pm.
