UPEI faculty and staff are asked to encourage their students to apply for the Thunder Cove Breast Cancer Award. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2014. The award is granted to an undergraduate or graduate student who has expressed interest in pursuing a project directly related to the care, prevention and/or cure of breast cancer. It will help to support a student with one or more of the following efforts: - Prepare a synthesis of best practices around breast cancer; - Conduct a survey or focus group on experiences of living with breast cancer; - Plan and execute a cancer related research project, specifically addressing how the study contributes to the care, cure and/or prevention of breast cancer; - Participate in research that could assist in the care, prevention, or cure of breast cancer. More information on the award: In February 2006, days after booking her honeymoon, Lesley Thompson was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. As her chemotherapy treatments were coming to an end, her first wedding anniversary was approaching. She and her husband decided as a tribute and thank you to all who had helped them, to hold a fundraiser at the family cottage where Lesley spent most of the summer recuperating. On August 26, 2006, the first annual Thunder Cove Sunset Fundraiser for Breast Cancer was held. This annual event raises money for the care, prevention, and cure of breast cancer, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Oncology Unit at Summerside’s Prince County Hospital. Application forms are available online at: http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/scholarshipsandawards/593

In 2012, Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne. Support was rallied from government, the private and public sectors to fund an inspiring new scholarship initiative in her honour: the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program. This program represents a unique opportunity to activate Canadian students and Canadian universities. With investments made to Canadian universities, this program will facilitate a dynamic community of young global leaders across the Commonwealth to create lasting impacts both at home and abroad through cross-cultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences. As part of this new program, Canadian universities are invited to submit multi-year project proposals seeking funding of up to $500,000 for projects of two to four years to support Queen Elizabeth Scholars. Only AUCC member institutions can apply; universities may submit no more than two proposals to the competition. Universities may partner with one or more AUCC members for a joint proposal. Groups from UPEI interested in submitting a proposal are asked to please express their intent to Adrienne Montgomery in Scholarships and Awards at amontgomery@upei.ca or (902) 620-5187 by the end of day on Wednesday, November 5.
