The Dr. Frances Gray Music Performance Competition 2015 Finals concert will be held Thursday, January 22 at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, at 7:30 pm. This annual competition was recently renamed in honour of Dr. Gray’s retirement from the UPEI Music Department. The six students chosen from the preliminary round to perform in the finals are: Rebecca Apps, soprano; Jillian Clow, mezzo soprano; Leah Inman, piano; Lucas MacPhail, alto saxophone; Kailey Norris, clarinet and Hannah Rollwage, mezzo soprano. Judges for the competition are well-known PEI musicians and educators: Reg Ballagh, Peter Bevan Baker, Ken Fornetran, Karen Graves and Anne White. Tickets are $15/$10 for students and seniors and are available at the door, in advance online at www.upeirecitals11.bpt.me, or by calling 902-566-0507 or by email at music@upei.ca.

After 35 years of service to the University of Prince Edward Island, Dr. Philip G. Davis retired this month. Please join the Department of Religious Studies in extending our warm wishes for his well-deserved retirement at a reception in his honour. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Lesley Zwicker will be interviewing for the open, tenure-track faculty position in radiology & diagnostic imaging in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College, on Tuesday, January 20 at 12:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre A. Dr. Zwicker graduated from AVC in 2010; completed an internship at WCVM in Saskatoon and is now completing her Masters of Veterinary Science program at AVC. Dr. Zwicker is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. As part of the interview process, Dr. Zwicker has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for third year DVM students. Any interested faculty and staff are invited to attend. A copy of her CV and letter of application will be available from Laurel Fisher (fisher@upei.ca) in the Department of Companion Animals.
Skills PEI will be on campus on Wednesday, January 21 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm to provide information on their Career Prep and Graduate Mentorship Programs. The Career Prep program is an initiative designed to help students (who are graduating this year or next year) find jobs in their field of study. The Graduate Mentorship Program is an initiative designed to help post-secondary graduates find valuable work experience and mentorship opportunities in their field of study. Staff and faculty are asked to encourage students to visit their booths located in the W.A Murphy Student Centre and the Robertson Library. For more information, please email careerservices@upei.ca.
A meeting of the Local Users Group (LUG) of the Atlantic Computational Excellence Network (ACEnet) will be held on January 29 at 1:00 pm in the Duffy Science Centre, room 202 (the ACEnet videoconferencing room). All are welcome to attend, especially those interested in getting involved in high-performance computing. Our guest will be Michelle Fash, Marketing and Business Development Manager of ACEnet. This weekend will mark the fourth swimming competition for the UPEI Panthers this season. The meet will be hosted by UPEI at the CARI Complex Aquatics Facility, January 17–18. Teams from Dalhousie, Memorial, Acadia, UNB, and Mount Allison Universities will descend on Charlottetown for the two-day swim competition. The meet is an opportunity for AUS swimmers to test their preparation leading into the AUS Championships, February 6–8, at Dalhousie University. A reception and naming ceremony will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 17 in the CARI Complex lobby. Light refreshments will be served. The swim events will take place immediately following the ceremony. The events are free of charge and all are welcome to attend. Come out and support your UPEI Panthers! The Department of Pathology and Microbiology has two candidates for Adjunct Graduate Faculty who will be presenting on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 10:30 am and 11:15 am in Room 287N, AVC McCain Learning Commons. The first candidate is Huimin Xu, Research Scientist, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. His seminar is titled "Regulatory Testing of Potato Viruses - Situation Today and Future Development." His seminar will start at 10:30 am. The second candidate is Tiago Hori, Post Doctoral Fellow, with the Center for Aquaculture Technologies Canada. His seminar is titled "Bioinformatics: Powering Discovery From Genomics Data" and will follow at 11:15 am. Everyone is welcome.
Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, February 6, 2015. They will be reviewed at the February meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after February 6 will be reviewed at the March meeting. Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk,’ renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received. Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms.
