Drs. Derek Price and Raphael Vanderstichel will give a short presentation with a live demo on a freely available and easy to use web application framework for R (statistical language), on Wednesday February 4, 10:30-11:15 am in AVC - 280N (glass common room). If you have data you want to share with others, you can easily make simple interactive graphs and maps for users to explore online. Some very basic knowledge of R is required to run the application, but even if you are not comfortable with R, this application makes it accessible. You'll be producing interactive graphs/maps online in no time! Everyone is invited to join us first for coffee and treats (hosted by the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiolgical Research - CVER) starting at 10:00 in room 343N.

The meeting of the Local Users Group (LUG) of the Atlantic Computational Excellence Network (ACEnet) which was originally scheduled for January 29th has been postponed to February 12th at 11:30am in DSC 202 (the ACEnet videoconferencing room). UPEI, with support from ACOA and the Province of Prince Edward Island, recently acquired a Zeiss 710 confocal laser scanning microscope. This equipment, which optically dissects and reconstructs samples in 3D, has become a valuable tool for many types of research and is essential to maintain a competitive edge in the research community. The broad range of applications available to laser scanning confocal microscopy include a wide variety of compositional and morphological studies of most cells and tissues as well as certain inanimate materials. In the coming months, a public presentation and demonstrations of the confocal laser scanning microscope will be made available to university researchers and industry partners who collaborate with UPEI investigators. If this type of microscopy would be valuable to your research, or you wish to arrange for individual or small group demonstrations of the microscope's capabilities, please contact Dr. Andrew Tasker at tasker@upei.ca.

Dr. Megan MacLellan will interview for the open, tenure-track faculty position in radiology & diagnostic imaging in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. MacLellan graduated from AVC in 2011; completed an internship at Tufts Veterinary Emergency & Treatment Specialists and is now completing a Medical Imaging Residency program at the University of Minnesota. As part of the interview process, Dr. MacLellan has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students on Friday, January 30 at 12:30 pm in AVC, Lecture Theatre A. The title of her presentation is: “Equine Imaging: Common Diseases.” Any interested faculty and staff are invited to attend. The presentation is titled "Opportunities to be a Global Village," and will explore the role of international development and international development organizations within Canadian contexts and how students can become involved locally. The Canadian Red Cross will host the final presentation titled "Restoring Family Links" in the Brown Bag Lunch Series on Friday, February 6 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. The Canadian Red Cross Restoring Family Links program helps people in Canada re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to armed conflict, natural disaster, migration and other humanitarian crises. UPEI Athletics and Recreation will host the eighth annual Shoot for the Cure fundraiser on Friday, February 6 with a series of activities leading up to, and during, the UPEI women’s basketball game starting at 6:00 pm versus the Acadia Axewomen. Shoot for the Cure is a fundraising initiative by the CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) and other related charities. The campaign goal is $6,000. Staff and faculty can support the women’s basketball team by purchasing a Shoot for the Cure t-shirt ($12) at Panther Central or the UPEI Bookstore, a paper icon ($1) from Panther Central, or through the “Gofund” donation page at: http://www.gofundme.com/k3xv14.
