Take part in the Mental Health Week Wrap-up today at 3:00 pm at The Wave, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. The event will feature a safe-listening and non-judgemental environment where various students, staff and faculty members will share their stories and encounters with mental illness. These stories will provide us with an opportunity to learn, care, and be inspired to help ourselves and those around us living with mental illnesses, and remind us all, that Relationships Matter. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome to attend!
Are you interested in what makes a Passive House different from an R-2000 building, or other energy efficient building techniques? The Environmental Studies and Physics department are sponsoring a showing of the "Passive House Revolution" Documentary (45 min) and hosting a Q&A panel with local Passive House owners, builders and a representative from the Office of Energy Efficiency of PEI on Thursday, March 26 from 7:00-9:00 pm (storm date, Wednesday, April 1) in AVC, Lecture Theatre A. This event is open to the general public.
The Standard Operating Procedure for -80 Freezers has been updated on the Health and Safety website. The SOP includes requirements and responsibilities of -80 freezer operations. The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions -- new, renewal, or amendment -- is Friday, April 3 for the April meeting. (Due to the holiday, electronic submissions will be accepted Friday hard copies will be accepted until 8:30 am on April 7). Ensure you always: *Download the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/research-services/research-certifications/a… *Use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms and only current forms will be accepted. Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date. *Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Department, room 2302. *Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca. Protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications. In order to communicate effectively, individuals have to master the techniques of effective listening and self expression.These skills involve verbal and non-verbal behaviours as well as the ability to speak with persuasion and confidence. This session will look at both sides of the communication equation. This session offers helpful strategies to: *Develop techniques to communicate assertively. *Speak effectively when conversing about conflict. *Recognize the barriers that can get in the way of listening. This training session will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015 ​from 1:00 to 2:00 pm in Andrew Hall, Room 142. Jordan Poley, Department of Pathology and Microbiology will present a seminar called "Sex-biased gene expression reveals mechanisms responsible for sexual dimorphism in the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis),"on Tuesday, March 17 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The UPEI Music Department is pleased to present Junior Recitals featuring Travis Boudreau and Parker Clements, baritones, both accompanied by Frances McBurnie, piano Thursday, March 12 at 7:30 pm at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall. Admission is free! ​The students will be performing works by Mozart, Debussy, Gershwin, ​Schumann, Handel and others.

There will be a UPEI blood borne pathogen training session: Wednesday, March 25 2:00-4:00 pm Kelley Memorial Building, room 313. This session is for those people whose research involves human blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids. Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Thursday, April 2, 2015. They will be reviewed at the April meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after April 2 will be reviewed at the May meeting. Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. John Nicholson will present the last of this year's public talks in the History of Medicine series on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:00 pm at the Health Sciences Building, room 301. This is a photographic history of the 10th Canadian Field Hospital from January to July of 1902. The photographs were taken by 20 year old William Alexander McKee from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He along with over 900 other Canadians enlisted with the last Canadian contingent to see active service in the South African Anglo/Boer War. The contingent consisted of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, the 10th Canadian Field Hospital and a team of 8 Nursing Sisters. All are welcome to attend!

Dr. Po-Yen Chou will be interviewing for one of two open, tenure-track faculty positions in small animal surgery in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. He will give a presentation titled: "Complications of Gastrointestinal Surgery: How to avoid them & how to manage them," on Friday, March 13 at 11:30am at AVC, Lecture Theatre A. Dr. Chou graduated from the National Taiwan University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 2004 and with a Master of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. He joined the Department of Companion Animals in 2011; first as an intern in our Small Animal Medicine & Surgery Rotating Internship program and is now in the final year of a three-year Small Animal Surgical Residency program. As part of the interview process, Dr. Chou has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students. Any interested faculty or staff are invited to attend. Take part in a showing of "A Beautiful Mind," a biopic of John Nash and his experiences with schizophrenia, starring Russell Crowe and directed by Ron Howard on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 pm in the Duffy Science Centre, room 135. Immediately following the movie, there will be a discussion facilitated by Dr. Jason Doiron, and Michael Matusiewicz. This event is free and popcorn will be provided!
