My research interests are diverse, and approaches to research questions include both quantitative and qualitative methods. I have a longstanding involvement with social and behavioural factors in cancer, with particular attention to cancer prevention, especially tobacco control. The challenge of smoking prevention and cessation in marginalized populations, such as people living in poverty, is a current focus. I have long been interested in research about teaching and learning in university, but just recently started conducting my first "official" research in the area, two experimental studies about the effects of "supported learning groups", and the impact of welcoming emails in introductory psychology classes. I am now resuming work in family violence prevention research; my honours students are doing projects in family violence over the coming year.
Honours student work also has or is being carried out regarding sun exposure, including developmental work on children's perceptions of suntans, and on the consequences of health-based versus appearance-based interventions on suntanning attitudes and intentions.
