Welcome to the University of Prince Edward Island

At UPEI you will find the highest-quality people and programs. And a calibre of student and university life that is second to none.

We are proud of UPEI's hallmark as a student-centred university. Students are at the heart of everything we do. First-year and upper-year students receive the personal attention of dedicated faculty and staff who know them by name, and who ensure that they get the most from the academic, para-academic, and social aspects of university life.

We are equally proud of UPEI's research achievements and contributions. In veterinary medicine, science, social science, the humanities, education, nursing, and business, UPEI professors are making significant contributions to knowledge. Students in graduate and honours programs — students at all levels — participate directly and vicariously in this exciting process of inquiry. Research partners and funding agencies at provincial, regional, national, and international levels recognize the quality and originality of research at UPEI.

UPEI's overall "hallmark" — its quality of university life — comprises four central elements:

  • rigorous study and inquiry, and a belief in the value of knowledge;
  • lifelong capacity-building, including self-regard and abilities of expression and critique;
  • development of the whole person, in a safe, positive, and collegial climate;
  • a sense of community, at UPEI — and in our local, regional, national and international contexts.

UPEI's alumni represent a vital component of our continuing community. We hear regularly from UPEI graduates — and from graduates of our founding institutions, St. Dunstan's University and Prince of Wales College — about their careers or further studies, their contributions to community, and their personal milestones.

In addition to these updates from graduates, we hear what they are saying about the quality of their education at UPEI. In a May 2007 study by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, 99% of UPEI graduates responded that they were satisfied with their university experience. In the 2006 National Survey of Student Engagement, UPEI was #1 university in Canada for interaction between faculty and senior students.

I invite you to explore our website. Please do not hesitate to pose e-mail inquiries. Or to come see us in person. We look forward to getting to know you better. And to you getting to know more about what makes UPEI a great university.
