The Physics department and the Charlottetown chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada
(RASC) have a free public viewing on the third Saturday of each month. The times for the viewings will vary from month to month depending on the daylight hours. The local RASC group will also hold special "Moon on Monday" sessions at intermittent times in the early evenings. These will focus on special features of the moon and will occur around the first quarter of the moon's cycle.
Location
The telescope dome is located on the rooftop of the Memorial building (Campus map). In the evening hours, after 7pm, parking lots are free, with parking lot "C" being the closest lot. Access to the building can be through either the main doors at the front, or off one side, where there is ramp access to a small side door.
Room 417, the room just before heading up that final flight of stairs to the roof, is used as a gathering point. If there is a full set of people already in the dome, you can rest there until the next group is ready to go upstairs. Volunteers from the RASC group will have general astronomy information and more information about that night's viewing.
To get to the dome, you can take the stairwell to the very top of the building, or take the elevator to the fourth floor, and then walk up an extra flight of stairs to the rooftop, and then a few extra stairs into the dome.
Upcoming Viewings:
- February 20: Time 7-9pm
- March 20: Time 8-10pm (To be confirmed)
- April 17: Time 8:30-10:30pm (To be confirmed)
Cancellation Notices
If it is raining, completely overcast, or the weather is predicted to be very poor, then the astronomy viewing will be cancelled. In that event, a message will be left at 902-566-0745, and also at the top of this web page by 6:30pm of the day of the viewing.
