The Faculty of Education, University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for the part-time (50% job-shared) term position of Coordinator of Bachelor of Education and Practice Teaching.

Reporting directly to the Dean of Education and working as a member of a team which includes staff, faculty and sessional instructors, the Coordinator establishes, manages, coordinates and facilitates all aspects of the program for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program and coordinates the administrative matters of the other undergraduate programs of the Faculty of Education.

The position also requires the incumbent to Co-chair the Bachelor of Education Committee. This Committee provides oversight for all of Education undergraduate programs which include the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde), and the Certificate in Adult Education.

Approximately 200 placements (local, national and international) are established in each academic year of the program.  Many of these placements will be arranged to provide opportunities for practicum in the optional International, Indigenous or Adult Education study focus. The Coordinator communicates verbally and in writing with school district administrators, principals, and teachers as placements are negotiated and confirmed. Facilitating the orientation and monitoring of students participating in international placements is also a responsibility of this position.

With members of the Faculty, the Coordinator is responsible for drafting, revising, disseminating, and implementing policies, guidelines and procedures associated with practicum. The Coordinator, working closely with members of the Faculty, will advise and support practicum advisors and evaluate pre-service teachers if necessary for those experiencing difficulty in practicum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Gathering data regarding the success of programs; mapping out future program directions; examining current undergraduate policies and initiating new ones; overseeing program reviews; and writing program modifications or new program proposals as required
• Advising the Dean on hiring sessional instructors and sitting on hiring committees for administration support personnel
• Sitting on the Dean’s Educational Advisory Committee
• Reporting on undergraduate programs for Faculty Council meetings, and participating in Faculty meetings and retreats
• Liaising with sessional instructors regarding their particular strengths and concerns, and identifying and supporting particular undergraduate instructor professional development needs
• Arranging all practicum placements, both domestic and international, in consultation with school principals and cooperating teachers
• Liaising with cooperating teachers regarding issues arising during practicum
• In-program individual problem solving, and identify and supporting our pre-service teachers when issues arise regarding their performance in coursework and/or practicum
• Liaising with our student Education Society
• Building and overseeing new student orientations, as well as orienting and supporting our undergraduate international students
• Leading orientation for pre-service teachers travelling abroad
• Building the undergraduate timetable
• Supporting the Graduate and Professional Programs Advisor, and providing advice to potential BEd applicants
• In collaboration with administrative support, monitoring administrative details regarding admissions to the undergraduate programs
• Certification and graduation preparations
• Supporting the practicum teams
• Manage budget for undergraduate practicum program
• Responding to recruiters and arranging recruiting sessions for students
• Liaising with the International Office regarding exchange students planning to attend in BEd courses
• Providing guidance to the Coordinator of the BEd (français langue seconde) program
• Representing Faculty on the Learning Beyond Borders UPEI initiative
• Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Candidates will hold a current, valid Canadian Teaching Certificate, a graduate degree in education and have several years’ successful experience as a teacher
• Administrative and/or coordinating experience at the school, district, or departmental level is required
• Experience supervising or mentoring pre-service teachers is considered an advantage, as is a sound knowledge of the school system in Prince Edward Island
• Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and conflict resolution skills are required
• Must have own transportation
• International travel or work experience will be considered an asset
