Student Assistant - Student Affairs - Accessibility Services
$12.25 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
August 28, 2019– May 1, 2020
The Department of Student Affairs at UPEI is looking for a Student Assistant who will share duties between the greater Student Affairs Department and Accessibility Services. The successful candidate will be working directly with Student Affairs and Accessibility Services in facilitating the department’s exam invigilation requirements, administrative duties, and support with Mental Health First Aid, Bystander, ASIST Training, Welcome Day, Accessibility Orientation, Mental Health Week, Make it Public, and NSO.
This person will report to the Coordinator of Accessibility Services and will be an essential part of the Student Affairs team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer UPEI and AVC internal exams for students registered with Accessibility Services in Robertson Library, Dalton Hall and AVC Testing Spaces
- Provide and operate accommodations needed for any exam invigilated through Accessibility Services. For example scribing services, text to speech software, increased time to write the exam, low lighting and noise-cancelling headphones
- Ensuring the academic integrity of all exams
- Complete proctor logs and tracking exams in Access Deck
- Support the Accessibility Support Facilitator and Exam Support Facilitator in exam invigilation preparation;
- Provide information about Student Affairs and Accessibility Services to students
- Support students in developing self-advocacy skills
- Academic coaching of students
- Assistance with accessing note-taking, alternate formats for texts and tutoring support
- Assist students in understanding students’ learning needs and developing strategies to support these needs
- Develop educational materials for instructors and students
- Assist in preparation of workshops hosted by Student Affairs
- Answering the phone, booking appointments and responding to emails in a trained and professional manner, and other administrative duties as assigned
- Maintaining confidentiality
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The candidate will be pursuing at minimum a Bachelor’s degree. Preference is given to those pursuing Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field with at least 1 year of experience working with university students with accessibility needs
- Experience using Kurzweil, Google Read and Write, Access Deck, Sonocent Audio Note Taker, Notability, Macintosh and PC computer systems are considered an asset
- The successful candidate will exhibit a high level of dependability and honesty and have excellent organizational and time management skills
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities
- Mental Health First Aid certification preferred
- ASIST certification preferred
- Supervisory experience, as well as knowledge of the administration and coordination of exams, is an asset
