The Department of Pathology and Microbiology is seeking a sessional instructor(s) to assist in delivery of Virology (VPM 2110) to second-year veterinary students; and Diagnostic Veterinary Virology (VPM4120) and Diagnostic Services – Virology Section (VPM 4500) to fourth-year veterinary students.  This position is subject to budgetary approval.

VPM 2110 - Virology

This course is a second-year core course offered during the fall semester of the second-year DVM curriculum. The course provides both theoretical and practical basis for understanding viral diseases in the animal species of veterinary importance.  Special emphasis is placed on the diagnostic procedures and pathogenesis.  This course presents important viral pathogens of animals and offers a theoretical and practical basis for understanding the diseases they cause.  This course consists of two hours of lecture and two hours of tutorial per week.  

VPM 4500 – Diagnostic Services – Virology section

This course is a fourth-year core rotation offered 4 times during the fall semester to small groups of 6-7 students/rotation.  The virology section consists of 1.5 days contact time per rotation. The focus of the rotation is clinical diagnostic virology and teaching is split 0.5 days by the Diagnostic Virologist and 1.0 day by the Contract Instructor.  Students are given practical experience in diagnostic virology through a review of virology concepts, proper procedures for collection, handling & submission of laboratory specimens, and interpretation of laboratory test results using a case study approach. 

VPM 4120 – Diagnostic Veterinary Virology

This course is a fourth-year elective rotation offered one week during the summer semester to a small group of 1-4 students.  This course presents current concepts in virology, including proper procedures for collection, handling and submission of appropriate laboratory specimens, interpretation of laboratory test results, and advanced knowledge of animal viral diseases.

Remuneration will be as specified in the Faculty Association Collective Agreement.

VPM 4120 is taught during the summer semester, one full week currently scheduled between July 15-21, 2019.  VPM 2110 and VPM 4500 are taught during the fall semester, which runs from August to December.

Priority will be given to members of the UPEI Sessional Roster for the Department of Pathology and Microbiology and to candidates who can teach in all three courses.

Qualifications:
Ideally the candidate will hold the following credentials:

• DVM or equivalent degree
• Advanced training or experience in veterinary virology
• Board certification with American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM)
