The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences is seeking one graduate Research Assistant to assist with an NSERC-funded project on Heun Equation and Special Functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The purpose of the first position is to provide an analysis of the Heun differential equation and its confluent forms. The Heun equation is a second-order differential equation with four singular points. The student will classify the equation singularities. This classification is used to establish a general technique based on the Frobenius method to construct some analytic solutions. These solutions are then studied and if possible, a connection with the classical orthogonal polynomials is established. The Mathematical properties of these solutions are investigated. A parallel study of Special Functions starting with Gamma functions, Pochhammer Symbols, and the solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation in terms of Classical orthogonal polynomials are studied. The goal of this study is to establish some connections between the solutions of the Heun equation and the Hypergeometric functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a strong background in Mathematical analysis
• In-depth knowledge of the methods of solving differential equations using Frobenius method
• Knowledge of using Symbolic Algebraic Systems such as Mathematica and Maple software to analyze the analytic solutions and examine any approximate solutions that might be developed
