Ria Johnston and Evan Couturier named UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week
Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for September 25–October 1 are Ria Johnston (women’s rugby) and Evan Couturier (men’s soccer).
Women’s rugby centre Ria Johnston is a second-year biology student from Charlottetown. She had her best game yet as a Panther on October 1, scoring three tries in a 56-19 win over St. Mary’s University.
"Ria had her most dominant performance as a Panther on both attack and defence against the Huskies," said head coach James Voye. "She utilized her speed scoring a game-high three tries and was one of our top defenders."
Evan Couturier, men’s soccer goalkeeper and fourth-year science student from Lower Coverdale, New Brunswick, played well in the net when the team went down to 10 men in a loss to St. Francis Xavier University on September 30. He was also named UPEI’s Player of the Game after the match.
"Evan is a warrior and fierce competitor. His shot stopping ability gave us a fighting chance in a game when were down to ten men," said head coach Lewis Page.
