Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Athletes of the Week for October 2–8 are Emily Duffy (women’s rugby) and Joe Ranger (men’s hockey).

Women’s rugby prop Emily Duffy is a fourth-year kinesiology student from Saint John, New Brunswick. She showed off her strength and powered her way to two tries in a critical 31-29 win over the Acadia University Axewomen on October 6. The win secured a home playoff game for the Panthers.

“Emily had a dominant performance against Acadia. She was a force during set pieces, scored two tries, and had her best game defensively as a Panther,” said head coach James Voye.

In his AUS debut, Joe Ranger, men’s hockey goaltender and first-year business student from Carp, Ontario, held the University of New Brunswick Reds to just one goal in a 1-0 loss on October 7. The rookie netminder recorded 31 saves and kept his team in the game throughout.

“Joe had a tremendous first game to start the season. He was good in exhibition, and it carried over to the first week,” said head coach Forbes MacPherson. “Joe was terrific against UNB. He made all saves that were expected and some very key saves. We are very excited about his play early on.”
