UPEI raised $11,254.62 for the Canadian Cancer Society, surpassing its goal of $10,000, during its annual Relay for Life, which was held virtually this year because of COVID-19.

The student-led virtual event, which took place on March 20, included various activities, including the luminary ceremony. Cancer survivor Jessica Perry, a UPEI nursing student, gave a moving speech. The participants also played games and watched a musical performance by Hailey Ahern, one of the student executive committee members, and her grandfather.

During the luminary ceremony, loved ones who have passed away from or survived cancer were honoured. The winners and fundraising total were also announced during the event. The fundraising page will remain open until the summer.

“We are so grateful for all the hard work our participants did to help us reach our fundraising goal!” said student co-organizer Sarah Doak. “We couldn't have an event without them. We'd also like to thank the UPEI Bookstore, Maritime Madness, Fritz Chocolates, and Greco for donating prizes for the event. We also couldn't have organized this event without the help of Allie Raper, the senior specialist for youth relay events at the Canadian Cancer Society.”

The event was organized by students Kristy Faulkner, Lily Greenan, Chloe Drummond, Hailey Ahern, and Doak.

“On behalf of UPEI, I congratulate all those who participated in and donated to this very important cause,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor. “I also congratulate and thank student leaders Sarah Doak and Kristy Faulkner and the executive committee for organizing the event. They did a wonderful job! I am so pleased that we were able to contribute to the fight against cancer despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Almost half of Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Since 1999, the Relay for Life has raised funds for groundbreaking research and services supporting Canadians who are living with cancer.
