AVC hosts community workshop about equine animal welfare, April 14

Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Ambulatory Equine Service, Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, will give a community workshop titled “The Truths and Myths of Equine Animal Welfare” on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 pm, in Lecture Theatre A. She will present the guidelines for minimum standards of care for the welfare of the horse, including proper nutrition, appropriate shelter, disease prevention and treatment, humane handling, and when necessary, end of life decisions and humane euthanasia. She will also provide information about recognizing signs for concern, such as how to score a horse’s body condition and what individuals can do if they suspect a horse is in distress and at risk.
