Gift Planning

Planned gifts contribute to UPEI in a number of important ways and donors have the option to direct a gift to a specific area of the university or to establish an undesignated gift that will be used for university priorities. Choosing to establish an anonymous legacy is possible, allowing the University to provide funding for new initiatives and the advancement of unexpected opportunities.

Some areas of support may include:

  • Scholarships for academic achievement.
  • Bursaries for financial need.
  • Gifts to Capital Needs (updated labs, physical structures).
  • Program Enhancement and Research
  • Aid for Student Mobility including travel and co-op programs.

Mary-Claire (Smith) Carlson, an alumna left a bequest that made it possible for the UPEI Department of Music to purchase a new Steinway grand piano to replace the former Steinway that was over 100 years old. Margaret Peake of Charlottetown loved animals and left a bequest and residual gift to endow four students enrolled at the Atlantic Veterinary College with "George and Margaret Peake Scholarship".

There are many options for planning gifts to UPEI. Ultimately you make the decision about which type of planned giving is best for you.

  • Bequest by will: Designate UPEI as beneficiary of a percentage or amount of your estate. Funds can be specific, unrestricted, or residual.
  • Life insurance: Name UPEI as the beneficiary on an insurance plan or transfer an existing policy to UPEI.
  • Gifts of securities: Designate UPEI as beneficiary of RRSPs or RRIFs. You can use this Marketable Securities Gifts form.
  • Charitable remainder trust: Ensure your beneficiaries are paid income for their lifetime and that the remainder is designated to UPEI.
  • Gift of residual interest: Make a gift of property to UPEI while retaining the property for your lifetime.
  • Gifts in kind: Donate tangible objects to UPEI (books, art, collectable, etc).
  • Gifts of real estate: Both private and commercial real estate make excellent gifts.

Giving options

  • Monthly giving: By giving an amount each month that’s right for you, you will be contributing in a significant way. Knowing that we can count on your support each month allows us to plan for the future. Many of our most loyal donors give in this way. (Pre-authorized debit, credit card, and online)
  • Annual giving: If you would like to show your support to UPEI or AVC in a way that allows us to make decisions based on expected funding from our loyal donors, please consider making a multiyear pledge. You may cancel your commitment at any time if your circumstances change. (Pre-authorized debit, credit card, and online)
  • Matching gift companies: Employer matching gift programs enable corporations and their employees to collaborate in their charitable giving. Please contact Rose Barbour to determine if your employer has a matching gift program. If they do, you can obtain a form from your company’s Human Resources Department. Your gift will have double the impact!
  • Tribute gifts: You can make your gift to the Annual Fund Campaign in honour or memory of someone. UPEI will send a card to the person that you are honouring with your gift. They’ll feel good and so will you! If you are giving in memory of someone, the family will be notified. Be sure to include the person/family’s contact information when you send your gift. We will also list the person’s name in the tribute section of our Annual Donor Report.

UPEI recognizes the essential role of professional advisors in clients' estate planning. We also understand the necessity of organized and professional guidelines for planned giving.

UPEI is a trusted and respected charity. It has gained this trust in a number of ways including:

  • respecting donor's wishes;
  • transparent and prudent management of financial resources; and,
  • confidential assistance.

We are dedicated to professionalism and have developed the Gift Planning Guide to assist professional advisors and their clients in the process of planned gift giving. Become an allied professional by contacting Myrtle Jenkins-Smith, Executive Director.

UPEI deeply appreciates every gift received from friends, alumni, foundations, corporations, faculty, staff, students and our other extended campus community supporters.  Your funds support research that changes lives, scholarships that recognize excellence, stronger academic programs, and new and enhanced facilities that offer 21st century technology and learning environments.  UPEI has soared in the last decade and the excitement that permeates this campus is built on the confidence expressed by our donors – we could not make this journey without you!

Donor Relations at UPEI is a function of the Department of Development and Alumni Engagement, which has responsibilities for alumni and development efforts at the University.  Our office plays a vital role in the University’s relationship with its donors, helping to strengthen those connections and communicate the University's gratitude for their support and confidence.

By working closely with other members of the university community, the Donor Relations Office oversees the creation of stewardship reports, plays a role in all donor recognition events, and explores and implements other effective ways of communicating with those who support UPEI.

If you have any comments or ideas that would help us to improve our stewardship efforts, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at (902) 894-2865; or by email at

Financial Need Awards—Bringing Students and Donors Together

Financial aid based scholarships and awards at UPEI are critical to many students who would not be able to attend university without this help.  Because of the confidential nature of financial need requirements, the recipients of these awards and scholarships are not publicly identified or included in UPEI recognition events.  We would, however, be pleased to arrange an opportunity for donors and recipients of these awards to get together for coffee or lunch.  If you support a financial need award or scholarship and would like to meet the recipient of your generosity, please call Rosemary O’Malley-Keyes at 894-2865 or e-mail at so that arrangements can be made.
