Interpersonal and Workplace Conflict Resolution Certificate

The Interpersonal and Workplace Conflict Resolution Certificate is designed for managers or employees who want to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to deal with conflict in the workplace and foster a respectful and harmonious workplace. The Certificate is open to anyone who has an interest in the topic; can be started at any time and can be completed at your own pace. This course will help you to improve your workplace performance, enhance your self-awareness related to conflict, gain the confidence to positively deal with conflict before it damages relationships or workplaces. Essentials of Conflict Resolution

This introductory core course examines principles, concepts and techniques of the interest-based approach to conflict resolution.  You will learn five modes of conflict handling and their uses, conflict self-awareness, conflict analysis, communication for improving relationships, interest-based negotiation, stages of problem solving, and applications in interpersonal one-to-one negotiation. 
 
Participants will gain practical skills to be able to:

  • Understand the five styles of conflict handling and their uses
  • Identify their own conflict self-awareness
  • Conduct a conflict analysis 
  • Effectively use communication skills to improve relationships
  • Apply interest-based approaches to resolve conflict in one-to-one interpersonal disputes

Prerequisites: There is no prerequisite for this course. This course prepares participants for admission to all other courses in the Program in Conflict Resolution Studies at UPEI.

Team Dynamics in the Workplace

Learn how a dynamic and productive team can bring together knowledge, skills, experience and perspectives of a wide range of people to solve multifaceted problems, make good decisions and deliver effective solutions.

Through group activities, lectures and discussions, participants will:

  • Examine the stages of team development and the factors that contribute to team success;
  • Explore common communication problems and learn how to facilitate participatory team discussions;
  • Discuss the impact of destructive conflict, as well as the value of constructive (conceptual) conflict, on team functioning;
  • Explore how to create a shared vision for success by setting overall and supporting goals;
  • Explore team decision-making and learn strategies for identifying and evaluating options/solutions;
  • Examine the behaviours of an effective team leader;
  • Learn how to avoid behaviours that may lead to team dysfunction.

Applied Ethics in Conflict Resolution

This core course examines the role of the conflict resolver in the light of ethical theories and principles as well as professional codes needed to guide practitioner conduct. While the applied ethics of mediation is the instructional focus, implications are drawn for other forms of dispute resolution including negotiation and facilitation. 

Participants will learn: 

  • The links between ethics and conflict resolution
  • The role of ethics in human conduct
  • Mediator goals, neutrality and the principle of client self-determination
  • When and how ethical issues arise in conflict resolution
  • Codes of professional ethics, uses and limits
  • Applied philosophical approaches to ethical decision-making
  • Ethical trouble-shooting in conflict resolution practice

Understanding and Resolving Conflict Through Personality Type

The Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) is a Personality Type Tool that identifies personality preferences and helps individuals to know and understand their own dynamic personality type.
 
This course focuses on using knowledge of personality type to better understand the sources of conflict and how we respond to it.
 
Through group activities, lectures and discussions, participants will:

  • Gain awareness of their own and others’ individual personality preferences;
  • Examine normal differences that occur in how people perceive information and make decisions;
  • Examine the relationship between personality type and stress;
  • Explore the various sources of conflict for different personality types;
  • Examine how different types respond to conflict and discover various type-sensitive strategies for dealing with conflict;
  • Examine what each type needs from others in order to resolve conflict;
  • Explore the MBTI Problem-Solving Model for using type to make more effective decisions.

Respect in the Workplace

This course will explore how to create a culture of respect in the workplace. Through lectures and exercises, participants will: 

  • Examine the characteristics of a respectful workplace;
  • Explore the causes and consequences of incivility and disrespect in the workplace;
  • Examine discriminatory and personal harassment in the workplace (laws, policies, impact);
  • Consider the impact of respect on employee engagement and organizational success;
  • Discuss factors leading to the creation of a culture of organizational respect;
  • Understand and reflect on the role of everyone in fostering civil and respectful workplace behaviours and creating a culture of respect.

Interest-Based Mediation

Mediation is an interest-based, confidential, voluntary process that empowers the parties involved in a conflict to find their own resolutions. The role of the interest based mediator is to facilitate a process which helps people to find solutions which meet the interests, or needs, of all parties to the conflict. Mediation is used in formal and informal contexts to resolve conflict in a variety of situations. This interactive, experiential three-day course focuses on the six steps of interest-based mediation and builds on the communication, active listening and problem-solving skills taught in Conflict Resolution Essentials.
 
Participants will: 

  • learn fundamental principles, benefits and applications of mediation
  • learn about the roles and responsibilities of a mediator
  • increase skills in the 6 step mediation process
  • increase communication skills for mediators
  • learn how to prepare yourself and your parties for mediation and co-mediation
  • identify ways to screen for appropriateness in individual cases

Collaborative Problem Solving

Finding ways to problem solve differences of opinion over what, why, or how something is done can be a way to support innovation, creativity, and excellent relationships. Collaboration, the art of working together for good solutions and good relationships, is about approaching those differences with the idea that finding solutions which meet the needs of everyone involved, including the organization and those it serves, is possible and paramount in a healthy work environment.

This two-day course will build on the foundational skills and process learned in the Essentials of Conflict Resolution course to support work team collaboration with a focus on effectively leading and participating in team problem solving. Participants learn:

  • Principles, concepts and techniques of the interest-based approach to collaborative problem solving in teams
  • Skills in moving from positions to interests
  • Collaborative problem solving process
  • Applications in facilitating collaborative team problem solving

Duration: 21 hours (3 days)

Advanced Mediation: Preparing Yourself and Your Clients for Success

This three-day experiential workshop builds on the skills and processes taught in Essentials of Conflict Resolution and Interest-Based Mediation. Through case studies, lectures and group discussions, participants will learn and practice advanced techniques and strategies for assessment of the conflict and ways to best prepare themselves and the parties for successful mediation.

Participants will gain practical skills to be able to: 

  • Conduct effective information meetings
  • Analyze and screen the conflict and its suitability for mediation
  • Coach parties for collaborative decision-making
  • Identify the key issues and interests to be addressed
  • Employ techniques for dealing with power imbalances
  • Prepare for mediation/co-mediation
