Contract:

The University of Prince Edward Island is actively seeking an experienced academic leader to serve as their new Vice-President Academic and Research.

Located in Charlottetown, the birthplace of Confederation and the capital city of Prince Edward Island, the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) has a rich history with roots in two founding institutions, Prince of Wales College (est. 1834) and Saint Dunstan’s University (est. 1855). Formed in 1969 as the provincial university, UPEI honours its proud legacy through academic excellence and research innovation. UPEI’s eight faculties and two schools offer a wide range of programs and degrees to their undergraduate, post-degree, graduate, and doctoral students. Home to Canada Research Chairs, a UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability, endowed and sponsored research chairs, and 3M National Teaching Fellows, UPEI offers its students access to exceptional faculty, researchers, and staff.

As the Vice-President Academic and Research, you will report directly to the President and Vice-Chancellor and be an integral member of the executive leadership team. You will provide direction to academic and student services leaders, support and enhance the research activities of faculty and students, and work collegially with the Senate and the UPEI Student Union. As the academic leader, you will be responsible for all academic and student services activities of the University, including programs leading to degrees, diplomas, and certificates; research and the dissemination of research results; academic and other support services for students; and the recruitment, admission, and retention of students. Your priorities will include cultivating and maintaining a quality environment for teaching and learning; building a positive and supportive research culture and raising the research profile of the University; promoting and supporting student success; and encouraging community engagement among faculty and students.

As the ideal candidate, you have demonstrated a capacity for outstanding academic leadership, a dedication to teaching, research, and creative activity, and a global perspective gained through international activity. You bring a distinguished academic background, a deep commitment to students and the student experience, and change leadership experience in a unionized environment. You lead with a collegial approach, have demonstrated success in fostering teamwork and are able to work and communicate effectively with the full university community. Your leadership style is characterized by creativity, innovation, and the keen ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
