6-Months. This is a grant funded position and term may be renewed/extended depending on performance, available funding, and departmental requirements. Flexible, Full-time, and/or Part-time work arrangements may be considered for the right candidates.

Synapse Applied Research and Industry Services Inc. has an opening for a Business Development Officer.

The BD Officer is responsible for advancing research and inventions into commercial opportunities and/or developing partnerships to support research and development at UPEI. This position will be located within the University of Prince Edward Island's (UPEI) technology transfer and commercialization organization, Synapse Applied Research and Industry Services (Synapse). This position involves supporting the innovative research and research collaborations within UPEI and engaging with external partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with industry to develop academic/industrial collaborative partnerships;
  • Work to identify and assess Intellectual Property (IP) that has potential commercial value to push through the commercialization pipeline;
  • Develop recommendations for protection and commercialization of IP arising from UPEI;
  • Negotiate and draft various types of agreements and liaise with legal representation as required on development of agreements involving IP, material and technology transfer, and licensing;
  • Support the development of business models for new innovation-based opportunities; 
  • Develop marketing strategies for UPEI technologies to attract licensees; Identify and advise on potential industry related and commercialization funding opportunities;
  • Ensure administrative compliance with UPEI’s policies & procedures;
  • Report and present progress in accordance with predetermined metrics to various internal and external stakeholders;
  • Represent Synapse at conferences, tradeshows or other events, as required.       

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Master’s Degree           
  • Experience working with university and industry partners·
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple projects and/or tasks
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and communication (both oral and written) skills
  • Research grant writing
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and part of a team
  • Must be willing to travel

Qualifications considered as an asset include:

  • Additional credentials such as a PhD
  • Experience in fields related to intellectual property and commercialization
