Join a research project directed toward measuring student music-related abilities (from memory for pop music to pitch discrimination) in a laboratory with longstanding expertise in music psychology, psychoacoustics, and music cognition. The project requires the assistance of a student with specialized programming and technical skills to help in the development of user-friendly auditory and music tests, making programs failsafe for online use. The programmer will also set up a data base to keep track of extensive data from test participants and develop a data backup system for programs and data. The assistant is expected to apply their knowledge in learning various skills required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Developing or refining computer programs for music psychology research
  • Computer and audio hardware troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Database development and management
  • Web-site  and social media development and updating
  • Ingesting batch content into a digital library
  • Training other team members in use of programs

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Priority will be given to students with 2 years background in computer science (including video game programming), engineering (with computer skills), psychology (with computer skills), or related fields (e.g., physics).
  • Courses in computer science, statistics, database systems, or similar skills acquired outside of course work
  • HTML, Excel
  • Good communication skills; ability to work responsibly without supervision
  • Superior organizational skills and record-keeping ability
  • Capacity to exercise confidentiality and conscientiousness
  • Evidence of academic achievement

 The following are regarded as assets:

  • Courses in psychology, music, computer graphics programming
  • Bilingualism
  • Music background
  • Knowledge of music notation software, or music composing software

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
