Be part of a potentially ground-breaking study of the development of music cognition during adolescence!  The Department of Psychology at the University of Prince Edward Island is accepting applications for a part-time term position of Research Associate from individuals who have strong organizational, statistical, communication, and management skills and an interest in music and the mind. This position is funded by NSERC for a research project entitled “Sensitive periods for music”.  Working with the principal investigator Professor Annabel J. Cohen, Ph.D., the position involves supporting a longitudinal study of adolescent music memory, hearing, and singing. The candidate must have experience in data management and best practices and be eager to acquire related skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Principal Investigator and other team members.
  • Collaborate in development, refinement, and piloting of music, auditory, and speech tests, for online and in-lab delivery
  • Maintain participant database
  • Organize and oversee execution of the annual schedule for collection of data from student cohorts
  • Supervise and share (with research assistants) the monitoring and conducting of testing sessions
  • Manage data (checking integrity, data merging, organization for statistical analysis)
  • Identify issues during data collection and analysis, and propose solutions
  • Analyze data (descriptive, regression, multivariate), write detailed reports to include tables and figures
  • Manage day-to-day laboratory activities and accounting
  • Maintain the laboratory bibliography on adolescence, music neuroscience, language development
  • Assist in preparing research funding proposals and scientific reports
  • Develop and maintain ethics proposals
  • Interact with high schools to obtain participant consent
  • Manage compensation of participants and other budget matters
  • Prepare collaboratively for publications and conference presentations as data warrant
  • Facilitate training (mentoring) of other research team members
  • Assist in planning lab meetings and events and maintaining records
  • Supervise updating of project website and project public face
  • Other support of the laboratory as may arise

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimally B.Sc or B.A. (Hons) plus experience, (Master’s plus experience, or Ph. D. preferred) in cognitive science or related field (e.g., psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, computer science, management, linguistics, engineering)

The candidate should have:

  • Beginning track record of scholarship and research
  • Background in spreadsheet management
  • analytical ability
  • Experience with the operations of a laboratory or research environment
  • Demonstrated record of working independently and in a team environment
  • Expertise in quantitative analysis
  • Experience in both large-scale datasets and small-scale original studies
  • Experience in one or more statistical programs: e.g., SPSS, R, JASP, Jamovi
  • Experience with creation of figures and data visualization
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in analysis and writing
  • Experience with virtual platforms
  • Reliability, curiosity, maturity, and responsible nature

The levels of experience and skills must meet the following needs:

  • Meticulous record keeping of large quantities of data that will be annually updated
  • Support preparation and submission of peer-reviewed journal articles

Assets include but are not required:

  • Knowledge of music, including pop music, ability to read music
  • Familiarity with high school system in PEI
  • Experience with adolescents
  • Bilingual/multilingual
