The mandate of the English Language Centre is to provide support for non-credit language programming for EAL learners.   Working closely with the staff from the English Language Centre and UPEI’s Work Integrated Learning, the program officer will administer and teach language training and professional skills training courses for local newcomers in the community.  The program officer will also work closely with community, industry, and government partners to assist participants with opportunities for a wide-range of initiatives.  The program officer is central to helping the participants have a successful transition from language learning to working in the community.   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working closely with the Manager, Customized English Language Programs, the Program Officer will teach professional communication skills to local newcomers and assist with administration of the initiatives of the program including:                               

  • Teaching English for Specific Purposes and professional English (oral communication skills) for those with a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 6+
  • Formative and summative evaluation
  • Curriculum development & lesson planning
  • Curriculum evaluation and revision
  • Administration of program initiatives
  • Develop and support a network of community and industry partners to engage with local newcomers in various program initiatives
  • Provide resources and assist students by coaching, guiding, and finding best-fit placements
  • Maintain regular contact with employer/partners to provide support and assist in navigating any challenges
  • Liaise with external stakeholders to gather and disseminate relevant labour market information
  • Assist with student career preparation such as mock interviews, career fair, volunteer fair etc.
  • Holding office hours to provide student assistance
  • Facilitation of some special events and/or workshops
  • Upholding the policies and regulations of UPEI
  • Assist with monitoring expenses and budgeting in coordination with the Manager, Customized English Language Programs

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree with demonstrated experience in ESL teaching certificate & experience, or adult ESL teaching experience in combination with a relevant degree.
  • Experience in language assessment, teaching professional communication skills, intercultural education, and familiarity with UPEI an asset.
  • Experience in or knowledge of employability competencies
  • Excellent communication skills to ensure clear expectations, roles, and responsibilities and to maintain positive relationships among and between internal and external stakeholders
  • A high level of professionalism and ability to quickly assess situations and make evidence-based judgements to benefit student and relationships with employer-partners
  • Demonstrated ability to network and foster relationships employing intercultural competencies, diplomacy and tact
  • Experience with policy development and implementation would be an asset, as would knowledge of labour and market trends, marketing and social media
  • Flexibility in regard to working hours during peak times (September and January) is required.
