Reporting to the Director, Office of Commercialization, Industry, & Innovation the Industry Contract Officer will support the research and innovation needs of the University of Prince Edward Island. This position is responsible for supporting the University community by providing efficient and industry friendly contract management and intellectual property support while ensuring compliance with Board of Governors’ approved policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the BD Officers and Director of OCI2 in the drafting and negotiation of various types of agreements involving research partnership including but not limited to: Intellectual Property assignments, material & technology transfer, and licensing
  • Ensure that clients and UPEI stakeholders have a clear understanding of contractual commitments, including IP arrangements, confidentiality terms, timescales, deliverables and payment terms
  • Ensure administrative compliance with UPEl policies & procedures
  • With guidance from the Contracts Research Advisor provide University staff, faculty and researchers with support and advice regarding partnered contracts, including advising on contract terms and compliance with UPEI policy
  • Draft and review partnered contracts from a legal perspective, with guidance from the Contracts Research Advisor
  • Work closely with OCI2 staff in supporting efficient review and processing of contracts to support a ‘speed of business’ approach, including management of contract process
  • Work with BD Officers to identify and assess Intellectual Property (IP) arising from UPEI that has potential commercial value
  • Support and manage the UPEI IP portfolio including advising on IP protection, prosecution, and commercialization strategies
  • Work with OCI2 staff, UPEI researchers, and patent agents to prepare patent filings and prosecutions for UPEI IP
  • Develop marketing strategies for UPEI technologies to attract licensees/partners
  • Represent UPEI OCI2 on various committee’s as needed (UPEI’s animal care committee, PEI’s Venture Development Coordinating Committee, SpringBoard Atlantic’s grant review committee)
  • Represent UPEI OCI2 at conferences, tradeshows or other events, as required
  • Report and present progress in accordance with predetermined metrics to various internal and external stakeholders

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s Degree and experience in developing and evaluating legal agreements in a research/partnership context        
  • Experience in Legal Drafting
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of contract law, indemnity, insurance, liability, waivers and contract management
  • Ability to interpret legislation and policy
  • Problem-solving, analytical, facilitation skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, listening, written)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience interacting with various levels of a large organization is an asset
  • Computer knowledge and competencies including but not limited to Microsoft suite, and Google suite
  • Experience working with university and industry partners
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple projects and/or tasks
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and part of a team
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Additional credentials such as law degree or advanced contract training would be considered an asset
  • Experience in fields related to intellectual property protection and commercialization would be considered an asset
