Diagnostic Services invites applications to provide technical assistance and related laboratory services in the Post Mortem Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting pathologists with necropsy examinations in a wide variety of animal species 
  • Accepting carcasses from clients and taking case histories
  • Dissection of a large variety of animal species
  • Appropriately handling and disposing of tissues and carcasses
  • Collection and fixation of tissue specimens for teaching purposes
  • Aiding in student laboratory and rotation preparation
  • Assisting in the supervision of students on the postmortem floor
  • Sampling of aquatic species for surveillance/disease screening
  • Trimming of formalin fixed tissues
  • General cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment (including, but not limited to, a large industrial incinerator, knives, hand saws, and a vertical band saw)
  • Periodically, assisting with various research projects will be required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Animal Health Technician or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with animals and animal carcasses
  • Knowledge of animal anatomy would be an asset
  • Experience working in an abattoir and/or with farm animals (cattle, horses, swine, etc.) would also be an asset.
