The (4) international student ambassador position(s) will be awarded to returning UPEI international students who are in good academic standing, and who show a commitment to their fellow students and campus culture; have the personality to engage with other students and be a strong UPEI ambassador. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, have tutoring or mentoring experience, and who may have limited Canadian workplace experience.

The prime foci of the program are as follows: assist new students adjust to life in Canada, and gain an understanding of North American educational norms; assist existing and new students manage their time in self-isolation, by providing a helpful and understanding “ear”; and facilitate opportunities for new and returning students form friendships. Student ambassadors should be willing to collaborate with other student assistants such as the ELC Help Desk, International Buddy Program, Campus Life, and Residence Life Advisers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Check-in on new students - make sure they are aware of existing supports for students such as Student Affairs, Island Help-line and Aspiria, and refer to staff as needed
  • Publicity & Promotion of UPEI activities and learning events
  • Events- online in conjunction with other student assistants on campus, UPEISU and NSO leaders
  • Take part in online Meet and Greet sessions with students currently overseas
  • Help create resources of interest to new UPEI students
  • Help answer general questions about UPEI, where to access services, and life in Canada
  • Students must be willing to work flexible work hours to accommodate time-zone differences

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Well-demonstrated communication skills including oral, written, and electronic
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a friendly helpful demeanor
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to issues faced by students new to Canada
  • Experience in organizing programming and/or preparing outreach material
  • Good knowledge of UPEI and the broader Prince Edward Island community
  • Experience working with international students or the international experience
  • Abilities in a language other than English would be an asset

The student in this position understands that they are acting as a representative of the University of Prince Edward Island Student Union and the University of Prince Edward Island, and agrees to keep confidential anything they learn during the course of their job, and agree to sign a contract
