The Chemistry department seeks applications for a Technical Laboratory Student Assistant to aid department technicians with various technical duties required for the development and operation of the undergraduate lab program for a six week term.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lab assistant will:

  • Update existing inventory and Safety Data Sheets as required
  • Prepare and package solutions and reagents
  • Perform accurate analytical analysis of solutions and reagents
  • Assist in the adaptation, development, and testing of standard operating procedures for new scientific instrumentation
  • Other duties as required by department technicians

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student should be a Chemistry Major having completed at minimum all the laboratories specified in the second year Majors/Honours stream, including CHEM 2210
  • Knowledge of safe chemical handling procedures is required
  • Student should have strong work ethic and be self-starting with attention to fine detail and a willingness to perform tedious work accurately
  • Student should have proficient lab skills and be able to work safely with light supervisio

Student hired will be required to successfully complete an on-line WHIMIS course and attend a mandatory site safety training session prior to starting work. This training will be offered the first day of work by supervisor.

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
