The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications to fill an advisor position to support UPEI Indigenous students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Core responsibilities will include the provision of advising services to Indigenous students experiencing a variety of personal, academic and educational concerns
  • Support and work closely with the Elder(s) in Residence
  • Coordination of Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre resources and activities. These activities will promote a sense of community and belonging for Indigenous students while raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, traditions and history at UPEI.
  • The design and delivery of group programs and outreach activities, both online and inperson
  • Reporting to the Director of Student Affairs,  the incumbent will work in conjunction with the academic support team and recruitment team in working with high school counsellors and appropriate community resources that aim to support Indigenous students with post-secondary enrolment
  • Work with faculty and staff on student engagement and retention initiatives for Indigenious students
  • Actively participate in the campus community to promote and encourage the active inclusion of Indigenous pedagogies in a broad range of university activities and strategies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor of Arts degree in a social science along with a minimum of three years’ experience working with people, ideally in an appropriate post-secondary environment
  • Familiarity working within Indigenous communities is essential
  • A Master’s degree and/or experience working with a diverse student population reflecting the reality of today’s campus, including issues of culture, gender, orientation, and equity would be considered assets
  • Experience in leadership roles is essential and experience working on provincial and regional committees would be considered an asset
  • We seek an individual who has well developed listening, observational, and interview skills with the flexibility to respond to the changing demands of a dynamic environment
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Previous experience in a university setting is an asset, as is knowledge and experience addressing the challenges of student engagement and in particular, those of the first year experience
