Student Assistant - Department of Health Management - Atlantic Veterinary College
$15.75 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
May 17 – August 20, 2021
A DVM student is required to work on a dairy cattle project with Maritime Quality Milk in the AVC Department of Health Management. The student will work primarily in the research lab performing microbiology lab procedures. This job is a fulltime position for 3 to 3.5 months over the summer. There is potential to extend the position to allow for some casual work (<10hrs/week) during the school year. Most of the work would be done during the weekdays but some weekend work can be expected.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform basic bench-top microbiological tasks including culture of samples collected from dairy farms, assistance in performing MIC sensitivities, and target preparation of B-lactamase assays with MALDI-TOF
- Some molecular work such as nucleic acid extractions and PCR assays may also be required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of at least one year of the DVM program
- Good communication skills, computer skills and good inter-personal skills
- The student needs to be able to pay good attention to details and follow protocols as written with a desire to expand their knowledge in research and microbiology
- Microbiological skills including culture set up, sub-culturing, MIC assays, experience in setting up targets for MALDI-TOF analysis, and experience with PCR and other molecular techniques are desirable
