Diagnostic Services invites applications from experienced and motivated medical laboratory technologists to provide technical and related laboratory services in the discipline of Hematology. This is a full-time permanent position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful technologist will be primarily involved in routine processing of hematology, coagulation and cytology submissions. As a secondary role, the incumbent will also process biochemistry and urinalysis submissions from aquatic animals, livestock, companion animals, birds, wildlife, and exotic animals.

The benchwork includes but is not limited to:

  • Preparation and staining of blood smears, morphological evaluation of stained blood smears and automated analysis (Sysmex XTV, Cobas 6000, Cobas c501, Stago STA Satellite) of whole blood, serum, plasma, and fluid samples.
  • Processing (including cytospin preparation) of fluid and cytology submissions and urinalysis is also required.
  • Blood banking submissions are occasionally processed. 
  • Daily running of Quality Control (QC) material, verification of QC protocols and troubleshooting QC materials and automated instruments are part of this position. 
  • Entry of patient demographics and results and printing of reports may be required as needed. 
  • Veterinary-specific training will be provided to the successful applicant.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) designation is required
  • Relevant years of related diagnostic experience preferably in a clinical laboratory setting (preferably in hematology) are required
  • BSc would be an asset
  • Excellent organizational, computer and communication skills are required
  • Experience in blood smear evaluation and with veterinary hematologic, biochemical and coagulation instruments as well as with cytologic preparation of fluids and tissues would be an asset
  • Experience with quality control protocols and with ISO standards is desirable
  • Good bench skills are essential
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision, to multitask and to troubleshoot technical issues at the bench and instrument level is desirable
