Robertson Library is looking for a part-time student assistant to collect and compile data for the Library's Textbook Project.

The Textbook Project aims to enhance the Robertson Library collections by purchasing texts that are required throughout the UPEI undergraduate curriculum for use by students in those courses, as well as identifying such books already in the collection.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Successful candidate will work under the Supervision of the Collections Librarian.

Responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with the Registrar, Bookstore, and UPEI academic departments to acquire information regarding course-required texts and course enrolment statistics
  • Use library-provided resources to evaluate the Library's existing holdings for those texts and determine purchase options and costs for the texts not currently owned
  • Analyze value on cost-per-student basis and make recommendations on what texts to purchase given multiple possible purchasing budgets
  • Create recordkeeping system for all of the above that can be used by library staff going forward to analyze future semesters' textbooks
  • Most of the work will be done on a computer but may require visiting various departments on campus in person

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The successful candidate will ideally be familiar with working in an office environment
  • This position requires strong computer, organizational, and administrative skills with a keen eye for detail, as well as excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets is required
  • Basic financial mathematics skills are required
  • Experience with Gmail is strongly recommended
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain well-organized records of data and work done would be considered an asset
  • Prior administrative work for any academic UPEI office would be an asset
  • Familiarity with book publishing industry standards and book online shopping websites would be an asset
