The Department of Philosophy at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for the position of Sessional Instructor for the Winter 2022 Semester. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Phil 1020 - Introduction to Ethics and Social Philosophy

This course explores some basic questions about human life as they have been addressed in western philosophy, which may include: What is the meaning of life? What is it to live a good life? What is justice? How should a society be organized in order to be a just society? How do answers to these questions vary with different theories of human nature? What is the basis for judgments of right and wrong in interpersonal relations, in relation to the environment, and in public policy? How do we appraise competing values? What is virtue? Topics may also include: gender; sexuality; racism; colonization; health and disability; the nature of religion.

Lectures: Three hours a week

Class is scheduled for TTh 2:30 – 3:45 pm.

Qualifications:

The successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a Ph.D. in a field related to philosophy and environmental studies. Previous teaching experience and/or publications focused on the teaching of ethics and social philosophy or on basic issues in ethics or social philosophy will be an asset.

Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster in the academic unit.
