The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in Fall 2021.

Please note that the course includes one hour of a pre-course reading/assignment, as well as 35 hours of synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The course will be co-taught with other instructors.  If you wish to co-submit with another person, please do so. Co-submission, however, is not required.

The instructors will be asked to work closely with the UPEI Academic Lead in preparation for the course. This includes pre-course conference calls, a post-course debriefing conference call, and a group debrief with all CELN instructors at the end of the course offering session. All course preparation will need to be completed two months before the start date of the course.   

ED 5850 – Improving Language and Literacy Achievement

This course looks at strategies teachers can employ to develop language and literacy skills in the students in their classrooms. Current research in this area is presented and critiqued.

This is a three-semester hour course offered online from October 12 to December 7.  Section 1 will be taught in English and Section 3 will be taught in Inuktitut.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have completed the Certificate in Educational Leadership in Nunavut (CELN) program or the Educational Leadership Program; possess recent, successful teaching and leadership experience within the K-12 system in Nunavut; have experience speaking and teaching in Inuktut; and are long-term Northern educators. An understanding of Inuit education and recent legislation, collective agreements, code of ethics and values, and policies and curricula guiding school programs in Nunavut is required.

Applicants will normally possess a graduate degree in education with a focus on Inuit educational leadership.  A high level of expertise related to the literature and scholarship in both literacy and language development in K-12 and educational leadership in Nunavut, a comprehensive understanding of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as it is applied in light of recent educational legislation and policy in Nunavut, and the ability to teach comfortably in a bilingual (Inuktut/English) teaching environment with Inuit graduate students are required.

In all instances, qualified applicants on the UPEI Sessional Roster of the Faculty of Education will be given priority.  We welcome and encourage applications from Inuit educators.

The offering of these courses is conditional on final enrolment numbers, and the dates and Nunavut locations are currently considered tentative. All sessional courses are subject to the final budgetary and administrative approval.
