Applications are invited for the position of Dean of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The UPEI Faculty of Science is an active and dynamic group with a proven record of excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, and outreach. The Faculty is comprised of approximately 60 faculty and 60 sessional instructors who deliver programming to more than 1,500 students. UPEI’s Faculty of Science offers a wide variety of programs and research in Actuarial Science, Applied Human Sciences (including Foods and Nutrition and Kinesiology), Biology, Chemistry, Climate Change and Adaptation, Computer Science, Analytics, Environmental Studies, Financial Mathematics, Mathematics, Paramedicine, Physics, Psychology, Radiography, and Statistics.

UPEI is seeking a Dean of Science with a strong commitment to the University’s vision of enabling students to develop to their full potential in both the classroom and the community. In supporting this vision, the Dean will be a champion for teaching, research, and service, as well as collaboration, experience-based learning and UPEI’s institutional values as outlined within the UPEI Strategic Plan 2018-2023.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Research, the Dean of Science will be an advocate for the Faculty of Science and its long-term vision within the context of their broader role as a member of UPEI’s senior management team. In their role, the Dean will be responsible for fiscal and human resources for the Faculty of Science, and providing strong administrative leadership in a highly collegial environment. The Dean of Science will work to foster meaningful partnerships, both inside and outside the University, to further collaborative interests and community impacts in a manner that advances the breadth and excellence of teaching, research and service in the Faculty. This includes working with UPEI schools, faculties and departments to support interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and research, supporting the growth of graduate programming, and ensuring the continued development of a student-focused learning environment that is highly focused on program quality, positive student experiences, and outcomes.

A PhD or equivalent with relevant leadership and administrative skills, as well as strong research and teaching records, are requirements for this position. The ideal candidate will also possess outstanding communications skills, have the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders, and demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Specific qualifications include:

Leadership and Vision

  • The ability to lead a diverse group in identifying and articulating shared goals.

  • The ability to be an advocate for the Faculty of Science, while serving as a collaborative member of the University’s leadership team.

Academic Experience/Understanding

  • A record of distinction in research and teaching in one of the Faculty’s areas of expertise and consistent with an appointment as a tenured associate or full professor.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the role of experiential education, internationalization, and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research.

Management/Administration

  • The ability to listen, consult, and make decisions in a timely manner, while respecting institutional policies and collective agreements.
  • A proven track record of effective and responsible administrative leadership.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate effectively.
  • Proven ability to manage personnel and resources.
  • Professional integrity and sound judgment.
  • Commitment to openness, diversity, equity, inclusion, fairness, and respect.

External Relations/Partnership Development

  • The ability to nurture existing relationships and identify new opportunities to engage with the broader community in areas of research and service projects.
  • A commitment to interacting with diverse stakeholders including alumni, donors, and colleagues to promote UPEI and its Faculty of Science.

Communications

  • The ability to effectively communicate institutional vision and values as they relate to student experience, student wellness, and creating an environment in which students and employees reach their full potential.

Applications

The initial search is open to full-time tenured faculty members at UPEI at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The term of office of the Dean is six years with a formal review after three years.
