The Department of Philosophy at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for the position of Sessional Instructor for the Fall Semester 2022. We are seeking an instructor to teach the following course in the Department of Philosophy:

Philosophy 3730 – Philosophy of Language

This course introduces philosophical problems concerning language and provides a grounding in analytic philosophy. Students discuss truth and meaning, reference, speech acts, interpretation and translation, and metaphor. Questions such as the following are examined: What are the relationships among language, mind, and the world? How does language colour our thoughts about reality? Does each language bring with it a distinct conceptual system?

Lectures: Three hours a week

Class meeting times:  Hybrid, M W 3-4:15 pm

Qualifications:

  • Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Philosophy
  • Previous teaching experience and/or publications focused on the teaching of philosophy and/or on issues in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, ancient philosophy, or the history of philosophy will be an asset

Preference will be given to qualified candidates with seniority on the UPEI Sessional Roster in the academic unit.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
