The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for a part-time primary care veterinarian to staff the primary care emergency service.

The primary emergency service provides primary urgent and emergency coverage 24/7/365 for veterinary clinics and clients across Prince Edward Island. This service is part of the clinical teaching program in the VTH and emergency clinicians will provide clinical teaching to fourth year DVM students in emergency medicine. 

We are seeking a primary care veterinarian to join the team of Emergency Service clinicians to fill a 0.3125 FTE (Part-time) position in a term position from August 23, 2021, until December 31, 2021, with possibility of extension.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work with and oversee final year DVM students as part of the clinical year teaching program in emergency medicine
  • Willingness to oversee the emergency service while on shift including managing staff, and supervising interns with primary care cases during the shift
  • TRIAGE, assess, and treat all emergency cases that come in through the service, including basic emergency surgical procedures
  • Work and communicate effectively with referral services within the VTH to ensure smooth transfer of specialty referral level cases
  • Ensure that medical records are complete and accurate and ensure that written communications are sent to the client’s family veterinarian prior to the end of the shift
  • Ensure that clients are regularly updated with estimates and billing updates, and that billing is completed accurately, and that payment is received prior to discharge
  • Ensure clear and professional communication for case management with clients, colleagues, and island veterinarians
  • Ensure that the client has received adequate communication at discharge to know next steps for monitoring, at-home care (treatments), and follow up
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work within and among a pre-established academic, specialty referral setting, and to manage the unpredictable caseload associated with emergency medicine
  • Willingness to work in a rotating shift schedule including days, nights, and weekends to provide urgent and emergency veterinary care
  • Willingness to work statutory holidays and university closures (including storm closures) to provide urgent and emergency veterinary care

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary college resulting in DVM certification (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) resulting in a Certificate of Qualification from the CVMA (or equivalent)
  • Eligibility for licensure and to practice veterinary medicine in Prince Edward Island
  • A minimum of three years of emergency medicine experience in a veterinary primary care setting is preferred
  • Experience in working both as a solo practitioner and as part of a team of veterinarians is preferred
  • Ability to balance priorities, work with colleagues and delegate tasks appropriately to manage multiple cases simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills in both windows and iOS applications, with experience in electronic medical records
  • Preference given to individuals who have worked with DVM students in a significant mentorship or teaching capacity

Hours: 

Rotating shift schedule made up of 11-hour shifts (including 1-hour unpaid break).

Shift times are:

(a) 6:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Sunday

(b) 3:00pm - 2:00am Monday - Friday, 12:00pm -11:00pm Saturday/Sunday

(c) 9:00pm - 8:00am Monday - Sunday

0.3125 FTE (Part-time) will include 10 shifts in 8 weeks

Salary:  

Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Pro-rated for a part-time position. This appointment will be made at the Clinical Veterinary Professional (UPEIFA, BU2) level and is subject to final budgetary approval.  Eligibility of Clinical Veterinary Professionals for benefits will be in accordance with the FA2 collective agreement.
