Sociology-Anthropology 2590 Special Topic - INDIGENOUS LEGAL SYSTEMS
This course examines the Indigenous justice system and how it represents a viable alternative to the current adversarial, individual, sanction-based justice system in Canada. By making the Indigenous justice system the focal point, the course provides a better understanding of the non-Indigenous justice system. The importance of relationships, equity versus equality before the law, a sense of community, and the critically important role both healing and storytelling play in the development of an Indigenous justice system will be considered.
