The School of Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking a Climate Services Specialist to join its growing team and help decision-makers in this province understand and address climate change. The Climate Services Specialists role will include the delivery of local climate services including, but not limited to, user engagement to understand user needs, individual support to organizations in the use of climate information, and delivery of user training.

The Specialist will report to CLIMAtlantic Inc. and be hosted by the University of Prince Edward Island. This role helps advance the work of CLIMAtlantic Inc. and supports the UPEI School of Climate Change and Adaptation’s work on risk assessments and developing and implementing climate change adaptation strategies.  CLIMAtlantic Inc. is a new non-profit organization that is part of a national network of climate services centres (see the Canadian Centre for Climate Services). CLIMAtlantic will focus on creating a strong Atlantic Canada network generating a wealth of information sharing in this space, in addition to supporting specific unique place-based work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Climate Services Specialist will help stakeholders identify and explore relevant opportunities to address climate change specific to their circumstances and use context-appropriate climate information to ensure the effects of climate change are being considered in their decision making
  • The Climate Services Specialist will support these partners in their adaptation planning efforts (that will include conducting their climate change vulnerability assessments and developing their climate change adaptation plans) – while also providing support and services to other sectors engaged in adaptation
  • The Climate Services Specialist will be required to give public presentations to a wide variety of different groups, including both industry and community groups
  • The Climate Services Specialist will travel throughout Prince Edward Island as well as occasionally within Atlantic Canada

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A university degree in a STEM-related field (e.g., environmental sciences, planning, engineering)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience interpreting and communicating meteorological, climatological, and environmental data as well as a strong understanding of climate adaptation programming is required
  • Experience in project management, designing and managing data specific to climate change impacts is considered an asset
  • Experience in the preparation and delivery of science-based training to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences, including group facilitation; and strong written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Experience writing reports and proposals
  • The ability to multi-task, be imaginative, detail-oriented, dedicated, self-directed and organized as well as a team player
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with effectiveness, efficiency, and independently
  • Relationship and network-building skills will be critical
