A team of researchers from Physics, Engineering, Chemistry and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), seeks applications for a post-doctoral fellowship to support the development of a hand-held device for the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This research is supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research COVID-19 Research Grant. The post-doctoral fellowship will be based at the University of Prince Edward Island located in Charlottetown, PE, Canada, and is subject to final budgetary approval.

Within the approved project plan, the post-doctoral fellow will:

  • Develop and evaluate a molecular assay based on loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)
  • Participate in the development of a nasal secretion model for testing and evaluation
  • Design and carry out laboratory experiments to purify and test samples (lab derived and field acquired), establish sensitivity and specificity parameters, as well as determine test reliability
  • Advise on the design and manufacture of the device reader to maximize efficacy and reliability of the test

This post-doctoral fellowship requires an in-depth knowledge of molecular biology and virus detection techniques. The selected applicant must have a PhD in Molecular Biology or related field, preferably completed in the last 5 years.

The post-doctoral fellowship is to commence as soon as possible until June 28, 2022 with a competitive post-doctoral stipend being funded.
