The purpose of this position is to support the operation of UPEI’s enterprise IT applications, as an integral part of the Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) team. This position requires an intimate knowledge of database administration, general IT application/system components and the ability to perform some programming tasks. This role is geared towards managing the Ellucian Colleague system and its underlying database, and the management of systems that integrate with Colleague.  

This position supports the proper operation of, and integrations between, IT systems operating on the campus network, which provide a wide variety of mission critical services, including, but not limited to:  

  • Ellucian Colleague (Student/Finance/Human Resources/Payroll) / MyUPEI  
  • Ellucian CRM Recruit 
  • Moodle learning management system  
  • Campus Card system 
  • Other supported systems include Web-based applications, database systems, system monitoring, etc.  

This position interacts with, and is a resource for, all groups that compose ITSS. There is daily interaction with the broader campus community on a variety of technical support and consulting issues. Additionally, this position also has regular contact external to the University with vendors, suppliers, and other institutions on a variety of design, support, security, and procurement issues.  

This position requires some off-hours work, due to the nature of the systems that this role is responsible for.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working as part of the ITSS Team, the systems administrator position interfaces with the functional area team leaders and is responsible for such things as using Ellucian's software delivery and release systems, as well as system backups. The most critical duties for this position are application and database installations and upgrades, account maintenance, user account access, and security setup in support of the various administrative systems at UPEI. 

Duties include: 

  • Daily monitoring and maintenance, installation, and configuration of IT applications 
  • Consulting with others both inside and outside the department regarding the operation and use of IT systems and applications
  • Responding to new and changing needs through the reconfiguration of existing assets as well as recommending appropriate acquisitions of new technology 
  • Production control activities with regards to job scheduling, setup, and background process reporting 
  • Application and database tuning, storage management, and user account management
  • Installing new application releases; and providing system backups, restores, and related system maintenance
  • System and Database maintenance and including performance tuning, security, and disaster recovery
  • Responsible for maintaining all data dictionaries and for the control of new and/or additional data elements 
  • Understanding and guarding against the inappropriate alteration of data 
  • Recommending any additional hardware or software requirements needed for successful deployments, configuration, or maintenance 
  • Providing reporting support 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Business Administration. A Master’s degree in one of these disciplines would be an asset
  • 5 years’ work experience in a similar role
  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague, Ellucian CRM Recruit or similar ERP and CRM applications
  • Experience with Moodle or similar learning management systems
  • Experience with relational database system administration, especially Microsoft SQL Server, and extensive SQL knowledge and experience
  • Experience developing front- and back-end web-based applications using Java, JavaScript, PHP, and/or other similar technologies
  • Experience in Windows and Linux server administration
  • Skills in business analysis, soliciting requirements, and choosing solutions that meet clients’ needs – both stated and unstated
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in conjunction with a strong customer-service orientation
  • Technical writing skills that as applied to the creation of effective and complete documentation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer components
