The Animal Resources Unit at the Atlantic Veterinary College seeks a qualified technician to work in the Aquatic Animal Facility. The individual will report to the Animal Resources Manager and will provide technical support for teaching and research activities that involve primarily Aquatic species but may include terrestrial species when performing weekend and holiday duty.  The individual will also provide support to the operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities and will be required to be available for rotational weekend coverage and after hours on-call duty in support of these efforts. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing care to animals as specified by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC)
  • Assisting students, faculty and researchers working with animals
  • Providing technical support to facility users during project setup and execution
  • Ensuring proper documentation and storage of records on all aspects of the facility activities and operations
  • Must conform to facility specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) when working with animals, equipment, and records
  • Training new Aquatic Facility users on facility SOPs and procedures to ensure biosecurity compliance
  • Weekend duty is required on a rotational basis, as is after hours on-call duty which entails responding to Aquatic Facility emergency calls generated by the Siemens monitoring and control system as well as those calls from facility users out of regular hours

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a graduate of a recognized Aquaculture (diploma/degree) program or have a combination of education, training, and relevant experience (3-5 years) in the care and maintenance of aquatic species in a research setting
  • Experience with or the ability to be trained to work with a variety of other animal species such as companion, laboratory and exotic animals is essential
  • Proficiency in the use of computers is essential.  Will be required to manipulate system to make changes in study parameters and to respond to alarms using the Siemens monitor and control system
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team is essential
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills along with excellent written and oral communication abilities are essential
  • Experience working with animals in a teaching and/or research setting would be highly desirable
