The Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in Clinical Bacteriology. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. UPEI is committed to teaching, service and research. The AVC has 272 DVM students, over 60 graduate students, 70 full-time faculty, and a professional and technical team of 222 dedicated individuals. It has full accreditation by the AVMA/CVMA and delivers DVM, MVSc, MSc and PhD programs. 

The successful candidate will have primary duties in the provision of professional service within the AVC Diagnostic Services bacteriology laboratory and the instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses in veterinary bacteriology. Additionally, conducting bacteriology-related research will be expected. The diagnostic bacteriology laboratory at the AVC has state of the art equipment and is supported by 3 staff members. It provides high quality service to both the AVC Teaching Hospital and clients from the four Atlantic Canadian provinces. We are looking for a candidate who will contribute to our ongoing efforts to expand and improve diagnostic testing in bacteriology and mycology, including molecular testing assays at the AVC and UPEI.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Relevant experience in a veterinary clinical microbiology laboratory.
  • Experience in the performance and interpretation of diagnostic bacteriology/mycology tests.
  • Experience in didactic and clinical microbiology teaching.
  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • PhD degree in veterinary bacteriology/microbiology.
  • ACVM board-certification (or board-eligibility) in the Bacteriology and Mycology specialty.
  • Well-developed skills of collaboration, collegiality and communication.
  • Eligibility for licensure with the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association. Details on eligibility can be found at http://www.peivma.com/.

Among other possible courses, the position has shared teaching responsibilities in a required four-credit Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology course in the second year DVM program, as well as bacteriology modules during fourth year clinical rotations.  The individual will also supervise or co-supervise graduate students at the MSc and PhD levels.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Full-time, permanent faculty receive a comprehensive fringe benefits package detailed at the time of offer in accordance with the Collective Agreement.  This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.
