The Skeletal Muscle Health and Tissue Repair Lab at the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking a motivated research scientist to assist with research projects surrounding diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, and tissue repair.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:

Laboratory based research

  • Lead in the planning and implementation of wet lab-based research projects.
  • Develop SOPs and assays to examine protein localization, mRNA abundance and protein quantity
  • Develop and perform in-vivo mouse experiments targeted at assessing skin wound healing, nerve repair, muscle regeneration and small molecule treatments.
  • Develop and perform breeding and genotyping of transgenic reporter mouse strains
  • Develop and perform in-vitro cell culture experiments

Laboratory organization

  • Regularly attend and lead discussions at weekly laboratory meetings
  • Support experimentation of junior laboratory members
  • Aid in the procurement of goods and services pertaining to the laboratory
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates require an undergraduate degree in biological sciences or related field (MSc or PhD preferred) and have relevant experience in research project development

The following would be considered assets:

  • Familiarity with University processes and policies
  • Advanced graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Experience related to mouse surgical procedures, husbandry, and genotyping
  • Experience related to animal ethics applications
  • Extensive wet lab experience

The ideal candidate’s previous work experience will demonstrate:

  • Experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments which involve animals, cells, and bench work
  • Experience writing research manuscripts and reports
  • Experience maintaining a laboratory
  • Experience in collaborative, research environment
  • Excellent written, verbal, and inter-personal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and accounting software
