The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires an Animal Health Technician to work in both the Large and Small Animal Hospitals in the VTH, to support multiple services. An emphasis will be placed on supporting Large Animal Anesthesia and Large Animal Surgery; however, support may be required in any service throughout the hospital, including Small Animal Emergency/ICU and general anesthesia support. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under supervision, job responsibilities will include:       

  • Attending rounds
  • Working with technicians and clinicians in the hospital to anticipate, organize, and prioritize cases that need to be assisted with throughout the day
  • Completing and assisting with treatment orders for patients
  • Demonstrate ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required
  • Monitoring and reporting to the clinician any abnormalities in animals in relation to the treatments and/or monitoring of animals
  • Prepare patients for induction of anesthesia
  • Induce, maintain anaesthesia and recover all species
  • Maintaining biosecurity standards and appropriate waste management
  • Updating patient billing
  • Assist in the maintenance of medical records
  • Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
  • Will involve work in other areas of the hospital including ICU, Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, and Community Practice
  • Accompany patients to MRI and participate in the MRI schedule
  • Work in a position of flux that may revolve around and through many services within the large and small animal hospitals in a single shift
  • May involve flexible work hours each week (changing shift times and potential for evenings/weekends) for a total of 37.5 hours weekly to be scheduled by hospital administration
  • Must be able to work on-call shifts, on a rotational basis
  • Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a graduate of an Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
  • RVT designation is required
  • 3 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with large animals and small animals
  • 1 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting in anesthesia is required (preferably in specialty referral hospital setting)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required with small and large animals including venipuncture, catheter placement, sedation and induction, patient monitoring, patient preparation for large animal surgical/medical procedures, technical assistance with large animal surgical/medical procedures
  • Preference given to individuals with advanced technical skills in anesthesia (including  epidurals, nerve blocks, large animal general anesthesia, ventilatory therapy
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and self-motivation
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability in Windows and iOS Operating Systems
  • Previous experience with computerized medical records is required, with preference to applicants with knowledge of RxWorks,  SmartFlow, and/or Cubex
  • Demonstrated skills in prioritizing multiple tasks, time-management, and adaptability
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
  • Preference given to individuals with experience in specialty referral or academic large animal practice
