The Atlantic Veterinary College offers two, one-week junior day camps for youth entering grades 7, 8 and 9 in the 2021/2022 school year and two, one-week senior day camps for those entering grades 10, 11 and 12 in the 2021/2022 school year. The national award-winning Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp provides a high quality, hands on educational opportunity for children interested in veterinary medicine, animals, and science.

The positions are for 12 weeks employment – including as a counsellor with AVC Vet Camp, and potentially in materials preparation and/or working on College-related research and/or service projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Counsellors:

Camp Counsellors work with the AVC Vet Camp Coordinator on the day-to-day operations of the AVC Vet Camp. More information about the AVC Vet Camp can be found at www.upei.ca/avc/camp. Counsellors will also assist in the implementation of the College’s NSERC PromoScience-funded outreach program for Indigenous youth.

Student Research Assistants (SRAs):

Working closely with faculty, SRAs participate in the execution, analysis, and evaluation of AVC research and/or service projects. Duties may include performing lab and diagnostic tests, organizing and completing project assignments, creating, and maintaining records, conducting library searches, and/or related field work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidates must:

  • Possess strong organizational and leadership skills, good oral and written communication skills, and be a self-starter, detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and creative
  • Be willing to learn, teach, motivate, and supervise the activities of campers
  • Have the ability to work independently, the capacity to learn research methods and work routines, and have an interest in research
  • Be familiar with animals and animal handling
  • First aid certification is preferred, although candidates who are willing to complete certification will be considered.

Preference will be given to DVM students who have completed at least one year of the DVM program (by summer 2021); however, students in other disciplines will be considered. Prior experience as camp leader or counsellor would be an asset.

Priority to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment, Policies and Procedures Manual.
