Applications are invited for a position as a student research assistant for a grant funded research project entitled “Psychophysiological effects of Equine-assisted therapy on horses and in veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)”. The research will require off campus travel between Serene View Ranch (Pownal) and UPEI.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The successful applicant will be required to assist with data collection from humans participating in the equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) program.  Activities will include but are not limited to:

  • Collecting saliva from the mouth
  • Instrumenting humans with heart rate monitors
  • Organizing and preparing biological samples for research analysis  
  • Maintaining research supplies and ensuring proper research equipment maintenance
  • Maintaining a lab notebook during EFP sessions and other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a 4th year UPEI Kinesiology student 
  • Must be available every Wednesday 8:30-1:30 for the duration of the study period
  • Must have experience using HR monitors on humans
  • Must have experience with HRV analysis
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and reliable
  • Must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently when required
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures for biological sample processing
