Dr. James Polson is seeking one research assistant for work on a project using computer simulation methods to study the physical properties of polymer systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write a molecular Monte Carlo simulation program to measure and characterize the free energy function associated with the entropic barrier for a polymer that transitions between adjacent nanogrooves in a slit-like geometry of a nanofluidic device
  • Generate data with the simulation program by carrying out calculations on Compute Canada computer clusters
  • Analyze the resulting data to determine the scaling properties of the polymer free energy and compare the results with theoretical predictions and with recent experimental results for DNA in a nanofluidic device

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has completed an undergraduate physics program within the past 5 years
  • Has taken a senior undergraduate course in statistical mechanics
  • Experience using molecular Monte Carlo simulation method
  • Experience with programming in C/C++ or related language
  • Experience carrying out calculations on computer clusters operated by Compute Canada (or similar)
