The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering at the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking applications from competent and eligible candidates for a Research Assistant position in climate change and related expertise including projection of meteorological parameters using artificial neural networks and statistical downscaling methods. The incumbent will be investigating the climate change effects on major crops of Prince Edward Island and will be devising strategical management practices to cope with climate change issues. The incumbent will report to Dr. Aitazaz Farooque, Associate Professor and Industry Research Chair - Precision Agriculture Technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the graduate and undergraduate students of the group lead with research data collection and data analysis in laboratories as well as in fields across Atlantic Canada
  • Assist in manuscripts and report writing for various projects and research trials of the group lead
  • Downscale and project the meteorological parameters by using different emissions scenarios

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering or related disciplines. A masters degree in the relevant field of research will be an asset
  • The incumbent should be familiar with necessary software skills such as statistical downscaling software, artificial neural networks libraries, statistical software, geographic information system, and Microsoft Office
  • Must have a good academic record, scientific writing skills, preparation of scientific papers, a strong work ethic, capability to work in a team and independently, and willingness to work in lab and field environments
  • Demonstrated skills to design and conduct climate change studies
  • Clear understanding of calculating climate extremes using historical data and modelling skills to generate future climate extreme data
  • Strong communication skills with the demonstrated ability to present clearly, promote understanding through effective verbal, written and listening skills, facilitate change and build consensus
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive within the Prince Edward Island
